Let's #MentionPrevention

Picture

Talking about vaping and marijuana can be a difficult conversation to have. Durham Middlefield data suggests 9% of RSD#13 students are vaping and about 12% have used marijuana. Talking early and often is critical. We've created two discussion guides- one for parents and the other for peers- to help you start the conversation about the dangers of vaping. Talking with youth about the dangers of using marijuana and the potential impact for future addiction is important. To help aid this conversation we have developed PSA video's, conversation starters and more. View these resources below.

Parent Discussion Guide-
Talking with kids about substance use is critical, it helps prevent problems before they arise and address any problems that pop up.
If you find these conversations difficult to have, you’re not alone.
You have to know more than just the facts. You also have to know what to say, when to say it, and how to approach the discussion with the right mindset.
PEER-TO-PEER DISCUSSION GUIDE
If you have a friend who is vaping and you are concerned about the effect that could have on their health it might be hard to open up to them about your concerns. Here are some simple conversation starters to have this talk with your friends.

"What You Need To Know About Youth Vaping"
Presented By Tricia Dahl, Senior Research Assistant at Yale University

Tricia Dahl is a senior Research Assistant at Yale University School of Medicine working directly for Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin. Since 2001, she has worked on a number of clinical trials in the area of adult and adolescent substance abuse.
She has also been involved in researching the effects of e-cigarettes on adolescent behavior as part of Yale’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science, which recently completed a 5-year grant looking at how flavors, and sweeteners affect the initiation and development of addiction to current tobacco and modified risk tobacco products. Currently, the group is studying the influence of flavors, sweeteners and other constituents of tobacco products on appeal, use and abuse.
